Google & Stop Words

Posted in Google on Feb 03, 2008

Google changed how they handle some stop words. In the past they were treated as spacers in a search, but now many stop words are influencing the search results.

In the past a search for each of the following:

  • loan from a bank
  • loans from the bank

were processed like

  • loan from * bank

but in some cases those small changes in stopwords can make a big difference in the search results. Bill Slawski covered recent Google research on stopwords here.
