How to Get an Excellent Alexa Rating/Ranking

Posted in Search Engine Optimization, Traffic Generation on Feb 01, 2007

Does anyone actually care about Alexa rankings? I do. They're an additional metric that most webmasters are familiar with. Having a great Alexa ranking can help you sell more advertising, increase your site's prestige, and sell your site at a potentially higher price. Of course Alexa ranking is not too important, but luckily it is relatively easy to achieve a great Alexa ranking.

Here's all you need to do - Join as many popular web master communities as possible (you've probably already done this step) and:

  1. Post your site in their review section
  2. Get your site appraised (if different from the site's review section)
  3. Put a link to your site in your sig
  4. Conduct business as usual, but place interesting and important information on your site, so that interested people will have to click on your site.
  5. Make an interesting thread regarding Alexa rankings. Usually people who are interested in Alexa (i.e. have the Toolbar installed) will read the thread. Make sure that some critical aspect of the thread requires a click on your site.
  6. If your site has a blog, write some blog posts about Alexa, put them on social news, bookmarking sites, etc. Also, summarize the blog posting, and make a thread about it in the appropriate section with a link to your full article.
  7. Last but not least, make sure you have the Alexa toolbar installed.

So what does this do? Well, who else uses the Alexa toolbar besides webmasters? Not very many people, that's who. Getting traffic from these communities will definitely increase your Alexa rankings.

The main thing to remember is don't be an idiot. Don't make stupid posts. You should only post things on webmaster communities that will be helpful to the community. If you start spamming these communities with crap threads to increase your Alexa rankings, people are going to see right through it, and call you on your crap. Essentially, the key is to act normal, and make sure as many web masters as possible are clicking on your site.

Definitely some good tips here. I'd like to add a comment about something I noticed about Alexa Rank for a few of my sites. If you start a links campaign for your site, and also do directory submissions etc. you'll notice an improvement in your Alexa Rank. I've seen this for a number of sites. As long as you are involved in a links campaign, your Alexa Rank will improve. Once you stop getting links for site, you will see a drop in Alexa Ranking for your site. The reason behind this change is that when you contact other webmasters for link exchange, they are the people who have Alexa Toolbars installed. Hence when you stop contacting them, less people with Alexa Toolbar will visit your site.

If you want to submit your site to web directories, you can use this list of web directories, which lists free, reciprocal and paid web directories.
