Building a Targeted Link Network On a Budget
I'm sure many of you have spent time making dummy sites with the sole intention of having those sites link to your main site. For example, you may have a forum on Snowboarding, and in order to drive traffic to your main site, you create 60 sites about specific snowboarding niches, such "Colorado Snowboarding" or "Advanced Snowboarding Techniques" Each site links to 20 of the other sites, while the main navigation links on each site all point towards your main site. If the strategy is executed correctly, you now have 60 portals driving traffic to your site. If you're main site already has PR, linking back to a handful of those sites is a good way to start passing the PR down the chain.
Anyway, it's a technique that works, and it's a long, laborious endeavor to finish. However, there's a few ways to make this task take less time and money. The first issue you'll encounter is content. If you're building 60 one page sites, all targeting different keywords you're going to need content that matches those keywords. One easy and effective way to do this is by article spinning. Since all 60 of these sites are going to be about snowboarding in one aspect or another, you'll only need to write a general bit of information regarding snowboarding, and then spin the article 60 times.
So what is article spinning? Essentially it boils down to word substitution, and it's used to avoid the duplicate content penalty. An example of article spinning is given below:
Snowboarding is one of America's favorite winter sports. Once thought of as an underground and rogue sport, it is now considered by many to be a mainstream sport, as popular or even more popular then skiing among many age groups.
Now here's an example of that same article after it was spun.
Snowboarding is one of the United States preferred winter activities. Once regarded as a subversive and rascal activity, it is now thought of by many to be an accepted sport, as liked or even more like then skiing among a lot of age groups.
You'll notice the word "rascal" in there really doesn't fit, and that's the nature of article spinning. Not all words are going to match up. You'll need to proof read everything. So how do you spin an article? I simply use Microsoft Word myself. One way to do it is by selecting a word and hitting Shift+F7. Doing that, I spun the article into this form:
Snowboarding is one of America's choice winter games. In the past it was considered an alternative and rogue sport, it is at the present considered by countless to be a conventional sport, as well-liked or even more fashionable then skiing with countless age divisions.
As the article is spun more and more times, it becomes a bit more burdensome to read, however it' still targeting snowboarding. Using a manual technique like this, you should be able to spin a small article 20 to 30 times an hour, if you're fast. However, there are several commercial article spinning programs on the internet. Unfortunately I've been unable to find a free one at this point.
Anyway, let's get back to targeting specific niches. Now that we have a bunch of great unique introductory paragraphs for each of our site, we now need to target our niche. In this example, we'll target "Colorado Snowboarding". What we'll do is use one of our spun opening paragraphs, and then write a bit of targeted content towards Colorado Snowboarding, like so:
Snowboarding is one of America's choice winter games. In the past it was considered an alternative and rogue sport, it is at the present considered by countless to be a conventional sport, as well-liked or even more fashionable then skiing with countless age divisions
It's no surprise then, that snowboarding in Colorado has become so popular. That's why we've created this site as a resource for snowboarders in Colorado, to discuss the best slopes, mountains, and resorts for Colorado snowboarding. Check out the links on our left, and visit our active Colorado Snowboard forums, not to mention our great deals on snowboard equipment.
I'm sure you get the idea. The great thing is that if we're targeting other states as well in our campaign, we can spin the 2nd paragraph as well, and do a search and replace on the word Colorado with another state, say Oregon.
The next step in making this whole adventure worthwhile is choosing good domain names that match the keywords that you're targeting. If you're looking to save some money, there are places you can get .INFO names currently for under a $1 a piece, and .tk domains are always free. For the above example, coloradosnowboarding.info or coloradosnowboarding.tk would work perfectly for SEO purposes.
Finally, what about the site's template and design? If you're in a hurry and just trying to get the sites out there, you can always use a CMS system. This becomes especially easy if you're using a tool like Fantastico which will setup CMS systems for you.
