Topic Sensitive TrustRank12.13.11

Since TrustRank is topic-independent, it could place too much relevancy on topics that are overrepresented in the seed set of trusted sites. Thus you could use DMOZ or the Yahoo! Directory to help extend out the seeded sites to a broader array of sites and topically bias their TrustRank score based on the categories in which they are listed. You could then filter out the bottom half of trusted sites in each category to prevent too many spam sites from being selected as trust sources.

There is significant effort being placed on looking for ways to move the PageRank model to a model based upon trust and local communities.

To optimize your site for great Google Product Search listings, you need to submit a data feed to Google Base. It is a good idea to use descriptive image names and titles as well as use your keywords in the data you submit to get top Google Product Search placement.

The Meaning of PageRank (PR)09.05.11

Google is primarily driven by linkage data.

The Google Toolbar provides a 0-10 logarithmic scale to mimic the link popularity of pages. PageRank helps provide a quick glance how important Google thinks a page is.

Google would like you to believe that their PageRank algorithm is the core of their search technology, but they also use many other technologies to improve their search relevancy.

Many webmasters exchange links with as many people as they can, but there is an opportunity cost to everything you do. There are algorithms for sorting good links from bad links. Many link schemes increase your risk profile much quicker than they increase your potential rewards. When you link into the wrong circles, you run the risk of being associated with them.

It is important to note that this PageRank value is only one component of the Google search engine algorithm. Many times, a PR 4 site will rank above a PR 6 site because it was optimized better and has a well-defined descriptive inbound link profile, which means better, more natural links from more sites (and more related sites).

Google – Social Marketing Experiment08.08.11

According to TechCrunch, Google has been experimenting a new system which ranks sites through votes by the users themselves. Does this voting system sounds familiar? Well, if you are a Digg user, you'll definitely realize that Google has taken bits of Digg's most popular feature to their advantage

Google allows you to enhance the search results yourself by making the necessary changes such as moving, adding and even removing a certain search result. If by any chance that you want to undo your changes, Google also allows you to do so. Also take note that this "experimental feature" will only be available for a few weeks only.

As you can see from the image below, you can vote and hide sites from the search results. Take note that for the meantime, this feature are not applied to the general search results. It will only be available to users who has a Google Account.

Do Not Use AdSense Exchange Services!08.01.11

Sorry for not updating this blog in a long time. My place had a storm and my monitor and hard-drive was fried. So I had to wait for a few weeks to gather up some funds so I can get a new monitor and hard drive. Well, I'm back and hopefully I'll be able to make a post at least once a week.

Google #6 Ranking Filter07.25.11

Starting in early December through much of January many sites that typically ranked somewhere in the top 5 of Google's search results started ranking at #6 for a wide array of related phrases.

  • Many of the sites that were hit with this filter were older sites with few fresh links and over-optimized page copy.
  • At first Matt Cutts claimed he did not know what we were talking about.
  • Later Matt stated that they found something that would have acted like what we were seeing and they reversed it.

The filter was discussed in a lengthy WebmasterWorld thread.

TrustRank07.04.11

TrustRank is an algorithm that can be used to bias PageRank by placing additional authority on human-reviewed, trusted sites. Trust propagates out from the trusted pages and sites to pages and sites they link to. TrustRank also can be used to neutralize the effects of some types of low-quality link building from untrusted sources as well as to flag high-PageRank, low-trust websites for human review.

In the TrustRank research paper, the seed sites fit the following criteria:

  • Seed sites linked to many other websites. DMOZ and the Yahoo! Directory, for example, were most likely seed sites.
  • Seed sites were controlled by major corporations, educational bodies, or governmental bodies.
