Supplemental Results Index04.17.10

When the supplemental index was first launched Google labeled the supplemental results. SEOs came up with hacks for figuring out how many supplemental results different websites had, and after they got popular Google disabled them and removed the supplemental results label.

Google has an auxiliary index where it stores some documents it may not trust enough to include in its regular index. Supplemental search results are used to provide search results when not enough regular search results are available. Why do sites get put in the supplemental results?

Google uses the click parameter to rate the ranking of the ads. For normal search results also the same procedure applies where the top ten results have been produced due to the clicks. A good amount of visitors click on the 1st result and a little less click on the second and this continues with subsequently lesser clicks on each result in the descending order.

Many analytics programs show what pages are crawled frequently by search engines. If they crawl some parts of your site frequently it is safe to say they trust that part of your site significantly because they keep spending bandwidth to visit it frequently.

Google's advanced search page allows you to search for pages that are recently indexed. These search filters can be used to:

  • Find how well your site is getting indexed
  • Look for issues in new pages from your site that are getting indexed by Google
  • Find how how rapidly a story is spreading

High rankings on Google can make the difference between an extremely successful online business and a total failure. The position of your website in Google's search results can make or break your business.

But how much exactly is a top ranking on Google worth? What can a top ranking on Google do for your business?

Paid search results are worth $37.7 million per day
Google published its earnings last month. Google-owned sites (i.e. mainly the search results) generated revenues of $3.40 billion in the first quarter of 2008 (that's about $37.7 million per day).

Advertisers wouldn't pay Google so much money if they didn't profit from it. The dollar amount indicates how much it is worth to be listed on Google's first result page. And these numbers only represent the value of the paid search results.

Have you noticed that it is easer to get ranked higher on Google with older websites than it is with new websites? Have you ever wondered why is this so and what does it take for you to do to get a high ranking if you have a new website?

Why is it easier to get high rankings with older websites?

Spammers oftenly use brand new domain names to make a quick profit. Spammers often buy hundreds of domains at once and fill them with crap or scraper content and hoping to make a profit with the advertisements that appears on the sites (usually spammers use AdSense to put ads on these kind of sites). Black-hat webmasters also sometimes use new domains to test for new search engines exploit (mainly on spamming techniques)

It is obviously difficult for Google to know which sites (or domains) can be trusted and this is why Google had invented a filter system which down-ranks new websites until Google decides they can be trusted.
