SEO Barriers03.27.11

Just as there are steps you can take to improve your site's search engine performance, there are also things that can hurt your chances at optimal rankings. Below are some of the major culprits:

Avoid Frames

Sites utilizing frames typically separate the content of the page from the frameset, making it virtually impossible for search engines to find, let alone index and produce, the content of the framed pages in their results. If you have framed pages that you want to optimize for search engines, your best bet is to convert them to standard non-framed pages so that search engines can see what they have to offer for content display them properly.

Dynamic URLs

Dynamic URLs (e.g. containing "?" or "ID=") have traditionally been difficult for many search engines to crawl and index properly, although they are getting better at it. To play it safe, monitor your dynamically generated pages to assess whether or not the major search engines are finding them and, if necessary, create non-dynamic, search engine-friendly, versions of those pages on your site (e.g. yourorganization.com/about/default.asp). Internal Duplicate Content03.20.11

You most likely have heard of duplicate content but are you aware of "internal duplicate content"?

This is when two or more pages on your site have almost the exact same content and it happens a lot more then you may realize.

Google Removing PageRank Score?02.13.11

At WebmasterWorld forum, a hot debate about the possibility of Google removing the PageRank score from the Google Toolbar.

This is because of a few reasons:
- Toolbar PageRank numbers are always out of date…usually 3 months or more
- There are cases of 'buggy PR updates' that seriously misrepresent a sites or page's real PageRank.
- Matt Cutts (from Google) has frequently blogged that PageRank updates are a non-event around Google
- A flawed economy of massive link building and trading to increase a certain sites or page's PageRank.

Google is keeping an eye on this situation seriously despite the rants that go on and on in forum threads.

Directory Warnings02.06.11

Some sites that pose as directories do not provide static text links and/or their pages do not get indexed. Many of these databases will never provide any direct traffic or link popularity. Additionally, many directories require reciprocal linking and use their sites to promote aggressive high-margin products. If you link into sites that primarily promote off-topic high-margin items, then you are sharing the business risk that site owner is taking.

If you choose to spend money on directory submission, you should ensure that the directory provides direct traffic or link popularity. You can do this by checking to make sure their directory pages have some PageRank on them and are in Google's cache. Search Google for "cache:www.directory.com/page.php," and check the links of listed sites. When you scroll over a link in the directory, the status bar at the bottom should indicate the domain that the link is pointing to and not some sort of redirect. You also can right click on the link to copy link location and then paste that to the address bar.

Digg Update01.16.11

The ROI of traditional Digg focused link bait was already pretty bad, but it just got much worse. In January Digg did an algorithm update which requires much more voting diversity to rank, and sometimes hundreds of votes to make the homepage.

In the past some of my friends were able to rank stories by just having a group of friends vote on the same stories. Now that Digg has so many members they de-weighted the ability of a small group to vote a story to the homepage by requiring a wider group of votes.
